I (45M) recently met an Indian lady who is was born in Gayana India, lived there most of her life, then lived in England for like 4 years for university then back to India for 2 years and now moved here in Canada. I initially thought she was British Indian because she spoke with a convincing British accent but then she confirmed she is not British. I asked her why she speaks like that and she said ahe aquired it in the UK and learned so people understand her better. But with her family she still speaks in her native way. She then talked like that and it was still fake and more like a mixure of Indian and British accent. I told her it was wrong to fake an accent and comes across as trying to upgrade her background. And if that was really true now she would be learning a Canadian accent. She got upset at me and said there was nothing wrong with it. Like I get accents change but not in 4 years as an adult. Most people from India I meet who grew up there still have a bad accent despite years here and speak broken english. AITA for asking about it?
