Everyone involved here are adults, in their mid 20's. All names are fake. I do art commissions as a hobby, so I have a community of artists and regulars that I consider friends as well. Recently, two of these friends, let's call them Jerry and George, went together and split a commission with another artist. This artist does amazing work and prices their art accordingly. The piece had 4 characters and was $400 total. Three of the characters were George's, and one was Jerry's. Jerry is an incredibly generous and giving person with a good job, so he covered $350 of the cost, and George covered $50. George then went behind Jerry's back, lied to the artist to claim that he had talked with Jerry, and removed Jerry's character from the commission entirely. Jerry didn't know until the commission was done and posted in his server, with George saying the commission was "worth every penny." Again, Jerry paid for most of it, and his character wasn't even there! (Note: We are aware that the artist is just as much at fault as George, but they are working to make things right with Jerry. They didn't ask Jerry about the changes because Jerry had previously told them to talk to George about some details, so there was confusion. Either way, that's not the main issue.) Now, when Jerry told me this happened, I immediately blacklisted George from my commissions and cut him out of my community (kicked him from my Discord server and unfriended him there lol) and warned my other artist friends about what he'd done. I also encouraged Jerry to do the same. At first, Jerry was reluctant, and seemed as though he was going to let George off the hook and just never get a commission with him again. When I pointed out that George STOLE $350 FROM HIM when all he had to do was ask the artist for a version without Jerry's character, Jerry decided that I was right and did the same. I got the feeling that Jerry knew he needed to cut George off for this, but was reluctant to. Like I said, Jerry is a very generous person with a heart of gold, and sometimes he can be a bit of a doormat. but I felt like STEALING $350 FROM HIM was a good enough reason to cut that chord. Now, here's where I might be the idiot. Jerry has two other friends, Elaine and Kramer, who seemed to take George's side in this. They kept saying that George "made a mistake" and "wasn't malicious." To me, that downplayed greatly what George did and was unfair to Jerry's feelings. They also said that Jerry kicking George from HIS Discord server "might have been excessive." and even went as far as implying that I was manipulating Jerry into doing this. Now, Jerry and Kramer and Elaine have their own complicated history, and although it's too much to go into here, Kramer has 100% taken advantage of Jerry's generosity before. I told Jerry he should cut them off too, but now MORE of our friends are saying I'm letting my biases get to me. I feel like these people aren't Jerry's friends and haven't been. So, AITA?
