Insert obligatory first time poster, long time reader. I decided to post this now only since I'm moving and was reminded of this story. Anyway: I went to a larger public university in my state. I was stoked to finally move out and go to college, but one thing needed to be taken care of first: finding a roommate. I was initially going to room with a pal I went to high school with, but he decided rather late that he would go to a different university. That left me stuck with a random roommate. I'm sure you've all heard the roommate horror stories. However, this post isn't just about the horror story, but also about how I could've potentially reacted better. I'll call my roommate Alex. He was to put it frankly, someone who lacked basic respect for anything decent. When I first met him, I asked the classic: name, major, hometown. Instead of answering like a normal person, he just says, "Alex", looking down at his phone, ignoring the rest of what I said. I took that as a sign, and just lounged on my bed. I tried conversating with him the rest of the first night, and he would scoff (who the actual fuck scoffs), or straight up ignore me. Anyway, I went to bed around the midnight since I had some welcome week activities in the morning. Alex, instead played COD all night. Now, I wouldn't care if he had just played and kept to himself, but no. I'll just say I learned some new profanities as he yelled like a toddler every 10 minutes over the mic. It was almost impossible to sleep. I began to avoid him after that. Now is it turns from an awkward roommate situation into open hostility. I had a friend over one night who I met during the first few days. Alex was in his usual COD routine, screaming. My buddy, I'll call Joe, was uncomfortable as soon as Alex started yelling maybe a few minutes into his visit. Alex didn't pay my Joe any attention, as if he wasn't there. Anyway, Joe found some humor in Alex's banshee screaming. Then a little bit of a mix-up happened. Joe grabbed off Alex's headset and threw it across the room. What was next was straight out of a horror movie. Alex looked back, slowly, at me only. He thought I did it. He straight up threw a swing at me, with Joe coming to my defense and restraining him only after he got some knuckle on me. I let rip after that. I spoke my mind about Alex, and what I thought of him. I essentially described him as the classic incel. Words were exchanged between sides, and I subsequently left to spend the night at Joe's dorm. I'll start by telling you how Alex retaliated. I didn't have the peace of mind to taker my computer back to Joe's dorm that night. When I returned the next day, it was gone. I knew Alex was behind it. Now the AITA part. In retaliation I reported Alex to the RA and I promptly relocated his gaming console right into a dumpster in an alley. The RA got Alex moved after the whole fiasco, and we were both written up. So, AITIA?
